Powering a Moving Mini-City with Renewable Energy

2022 Rebelle Rally base camp being powered by Renewable Innovations MEC Solar unit

Powering a mini-city in the middle of the desert that moves locations every few days is not for the faint of heart. A Big THANK YOU and congratulations to our Renewable Innovations team and partners. You rose to the challenge and set a new bar by showing the world how hydrogen and fuel cell solutions can address Grid Gap and range anxiety. And how renewable energy can be the solution anywhere.

Every year we bring more and more power to the Rebelle Rally as we learn how we can better support the Rally – including our Renewable Innovations teams. Having the GM / BrightDrop Zevo EV delivery van made it easy for us to transport people and equipment by day and night. One more example of EVs doing their jobs in the middle of nowhere … and getting charged by Renewable Innovations.

Renewable Innovations' support trailer with 2kW of power

This year we also added a critical Support Trailer to the Renewable Innovations’ lineup. Of course it’s green - with solar panels on the top that can generate up to 2kW of power. Inside is a “powerful” set of inverters, large battery storage, and management. When the solar input was insufficient to run needed loads, other Renewable Innovations' renewable-powered vehicles were able to charge the Support Trailer’s battery storage.

LION ENERGY
A big shout out to Lion Energy for your Safari UT Lithium battery storage systems. This Support Vehicle used that to power many of the external lights for the Rally and internal control systems. We loved being able to use the Lithium battery technology for safer and longer-lasting storage.

SOL-ARK
Here’s another peek inside our Support Trailer. Huge thanks to our great partner Sol-Ark and their inverters. We were able to soak in all of the sun over our 12 days at the Rally and use it to power lighting and our control systems.

These same inverters are inside our MEC-S (Mobile Energy Command – Solar) that can generate as much as 48kW. This additional power was needed for more vehicle charging and other basecamp operations.

HOMEGRID
Here’s another peek inside our Support Trailer. Huge thanks to our great partner HomeGrid and their inverters. We were able to soak in all of the sun over our 12 days at the Rally and use it to power lighting and our control systems.

SMARTFLOWER
We were excited to bring our MEC-S (Mobile Energy Center – Solar) to the Rally again this year. With our Smartflower collecting the sun during the day, we were able to keep camp powered, especially at night.

BAYOTECH

And here’s proof you CAN charge EVs with green power ANYWHERE! Happy to have BayoTech as part of our ecosystem partners. Thanks for going on this journey with us … literally. It was so exiting to see your team pull up to our MEC-H (Mobile Energy Command - Hydrogen) and connect. We were able to immediately start charging the Rally EV fleet and the Brightdrop during the evening charging session - all using hydrogen.

If we can do it here, we can do it anywhere!

CE+T
What’s inside our Mobile Energy Command - Hydrogen? Here’s a peek at our Renewable Innovation’s Alvita energy storage systems, plus our CE+T based Inverters. We used these systems to generate and store critical power to support EV charging, base camp power, and a wide range of “city in the desert” requirements.

THE GREAT PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES
And 2022 is a wrap! We couldn’t have done it without our partners and our amazing Renewable Innovations teams on-site and back at HQ who designed, built, and managed the power systems we brought to the Rebelle Rally.

We’ve imagined it.
We did it.
Now let’s take it to every city and highway in the world!
